A new study shows Bulgaria’s air is the dirtiest in Europe. Some say if you go out and walk around the city in a white shirt, several hours later the shirt will be yellow/ grey -tinted. Poland also has fast rising concentration of pollution in the air. Some causes of this are Bulgaria and many surrounding countries burn wood for heating homes. Also, the way the wind blows is a major factor in this issue. Bulgaria has some of the highest concentrations of carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide, both which put people at a greater risk for cancer and asthma.
Waste management is one of the Ukraine’s most important issues. Most of the country's waste products are disposed of in landfills since there isn't a practical system. Solid waste has recently been polluting water sources since it is not disposed of properly. Not only do Ukrainians not have a practical system for disposing trash and chemicals, they also produce a lot of it. Every year, cities in the Ukraine produce 40 million cubic meters of trash. The worst of all this is that many hazardous wastes are being disposed this way and pollute water and contaminate the water ecosystems.
Deforestation is a very pressing issue in Russia. Much of the deforestation occurring is illegal and destroying much of the Taiga. Illegal land clearing results in thousands of dollars lost by the government. Although many governments are interfering and trying to limit the amount of forests being destroyed, there is still a lot of illegal cutting happening. One reason deforestation is so common here is the wood is very popular, especially in China, one of the largest importers for flooring and furnishing.
The green in this shows forests and trees in Russia, it shows that by 2020 more than half has been cleared and it is quickly shrinking.
Climate temperatures are rapidly increasing in the Czech Republic by 0.8℃ each year. In the Carpathian region (a large portion of Eastern Europe) heat waves and droughts are becoming more common. One of the main reasons for so much emission of greenhouse gasses is energy resources. Since energy and fuel is in such high demand in all parts of the economy and has become a necessity for everyone’s way of life, people use a lot of it. Although they are very needed these resources are diminishing quickly and destroying the earth. By 2020 Czech plans to have 13% of its energy to come from renewable resources.
Romania, just like so many other countries, has very high levels of pollution in its air and water. Factories, chemical plants, and power plants all burn fossil fuels constantly which leads to high levels of carbon and sulfur dioxide, both which cause acid rain. When all these chemicals mix into the water supply, people get sick and marine life dies. To solve this problem alternative forms of energy have been introduced.
